The Outdoor Plug is rated for use in wet locations. The outlet must be mounted in a vertical position with the outlets facing downward and at least 55 inches above ground level. The Smart Outdoor Plug must also be plugged into an outdoor-rated GFCI outlet with the appropriate outdoor cover. For more information on proper installation please consult the installation guide included with the plug.
Why do we recommend installing our outdoor plugs at least 55 inches above the ground level?
- Protection from Water and Moisture: Outdoor plugs are exposed to the elements, including rain, snow, and moisture. By placing the plug at least 55 inches above the ground, there’s a lower risk of water splashing up during rain or floods, helping to reduce the chance of electrical shorts or water damage.
- Weather Resistance: Elevating the plug can protect it from direct exposure to standing water, mud, or debris, which could affect its performance or damage it over time.
- Safety Standards: Some electrical safety guidelines require outdoor electrical outlets to be installed above a certain height to reduce the risk of accidental exposure to water, especially in wet or flood-prone areas.
- Convenience and Accessibility: Placing the plug at a higher level also makes it easier for users to access the plug for maintenance or adjustments, rather than having to bend down close to the ground, where dirt and moisture could accumulate.
Note: We understand that not every home has an outdoor plug positioned 55 inches above ground level. However, this height recommendation is part of our safety precautions to minimize the risk of water damage, electrical shorts, and ensure reliable product performance. If you’re using our product in an outdoor outlet that’s lower than the recommended height, please be aware of the increased exposure to weather elements and potential risks. Always take extra precautions, such as ensuring the area is dry and protected from water or debris, to maintain the safety and functionality of your device.
Outdoor Plug Operation Temperatures
Although the outdoor plug is wet rated, it can also withstand temperatures between 125F to -13F (51C to -25C).
